Derek Jeter To Be Named Sports Illustrated's 2009 Sportsmen Of The Year

He didn't win the MVP but that wont stop Sports Illustrated from naming Derek Jeter their 2009 "Sportsmen of the Year." Although it hasn't been confirmed, several reports have Jeter taking home the yearly honor given out by arguably they most popular and most respected sports magazine in America.

Jeter is the first Yankee to earn the honor in its 55 year history, he will now grace the cover of SI's sportsmen of the year issue. I'm not quite sure when the issue is expected to hit newsstands, but if its in November that will mean Jeter will have the outstanding honor of gracing the cover of SI twice in a month.

I know a lot of Yankee haters will say that Jeter doesn't deserve the award, but they have to realize this award isn't based just off numbers. Either way Jeter's numbers were still great, he was a legitimate MVP candidate, and the Captain of World Series winning New York Yankees...Doing it all with the utmost level of class and dignity. Take all of that into consideration and Jeter wins this award in a landslide...Just run through other sports like hockey, basketball, football, and golf...Its tough to find another viable candidate. Theres really only one athlete I could make an argument for...Jimmie Johnson for winning his fourth straight Nascar championship.

Congrats DJ...At this point in his career the chances look bleak that he will be able to earn that ever so elusive regular season MVP. So I guess you could say this is Jeter's lifetime achievement award.
