Theo Epstein At It Again...

The Red Sox have reportedly signed veteran third baseman Adrian Beltre to a one-year, $10 million contract. I just dont get it, please remind me--why do people continue to consider Theo Epstein one of the best GM's in baseball? The Lackey signing was great for the Sox, but I mean any ruh-tard southie from Dorchester would have pursued Lackey. And its not like the Boy Wonder had to work too hard pull that move off. Lackey, and even more so the dime piece of a wife he has wanted to play for the Red Sox. If Theo wants to continue to shop at TJ Maxx I'm not gonna hate, I love that place, but I know never to pay retail when I'm there, something Epstein has obviously forgotting over the past two off seasons. Beltre is a selfish juice-head who only plays well in a contract year. So I guess that would make this a genius move in the eye of any Red Sox fan since its only a one year deal.

It's a difficult subject for me to comment on, but I'd have to agree with ya X...partially. While I love T.J. Maxx too (great names at great prices!--btw loved that paying retail line HA!), but I don't think championship teams are built at bargain outlets. The Yankees and Red Sox both proved that this past season--with the Yanks frequenting Brooks Brothers on their way to their 27th title and the Sox getting lost in the bargain bin. I don't know why the Sox didn't show interest in DeRosa, who can play the entire field outside of pitcher and catcher. Plus he's a switch-hitter who can hit for power, average, gets on base, and can even steal a bag or two.

But this Beltre deal has a lot of upside. He's a career .270 hitter who averaged 24 dingers and 87 RBIs while wielding a slick glove at the hot corner. Sounds a little like the Red Sox 3B last year, Mike Lowell, who has averaged .280, 23, and 94 in his career while being considered one of the best fielding 3B in the league. Like Lowell, Beltre is a great doubles hitter and should salivate at the plate with the Green Monster on a short distance down that third baseline.

The jury will be out on Epstein's lastest bargain-bin find until the start of June. Remember David Ortiz--steroids or no steroids--was one of Epstein's best bargains. As was Kevin Millar, Todd Walker, Mark Bellhorn, Hideki Okajima, and Lowell too. In Theo I Trust! He's got his shit on lock.
