Boston: The Sports City of the Decade

A good point was raised earlier today, by The Empire. I can't argue too much with what he said. I don't like it, but I can't hate it either. I can only do what Massholes know how to do best; one-up him in a grandiose fashion. Yes, the New York Yankees may be the best baseball franchise of the new millennium. However, Boston is the sports city of the decade.

"How can you make such a lofty statement, Wes," you ask? Well, because I can and I have the statistics to back up. You see, unlike some of the run-of-the-mill blogs out there The Improper Sportsonian brings the facts to the table. We, here, are the Johnny Cochrane of the blogosphere. And if that glove doesn't fit, well then I'll just quit.

Starting with the Red Sox, they have gone 835-622 averaging 93 wins for the decade. And since the turn of the century they made the playoffs six times, making the ALCS 66% of the time. The Sox have made the World Series two times and are a remarkable 8-0 in World Series games played.

The Celtics fell on hard times in the late 90's and early 2000's, but hit their stride in 2007 winning the NBA title. And despite their poor showing, the C's made the playoffs six times as well. Celtic teams are 359-297 this decade averaging 45 wins per season on their way to three Atlantic Division titles. They have played in two Conference Finals and won the only time they have appeared in the finals.

I'll secede the Bruins from the list because they were embarrassing for so many years and the fact that there wasn't even professional hockey in the 2004-05 year. Besides, who really cares about a Canadian sport anyway? This is America baby!

Speaking of America, I'll now make my case with America's team, the New England Patriots. They won the Super Bowl in 2001, 2003, and 2004. They have twice set the NFL mark for consecutive regular season wins (21 over the 2003 & 2004 seasons, 19 over the 2006-2007 seasons). In 2007 the Pats had the best team ever assembled, putting together a perfect 16-0 regular season. They have made the Conference Championship game four times and have gone to the Super Bowl three times. The Pats have averaged an astonishing 12 wins per season while winning 6 division titles.

Separately, these teams (outside of the Patriots, who are arguably the best team of the decade) are productive in their respected leagues, but are not the best. Together, however, these three teams alone have combined for six titles in 9 years. That's more than New York (3), Pittsburgh (3), and Los Angeles (4). CUE THE DUCKS BOATS!

I don't know how else to put it, but Boston is unequivocally the best sports city of this decade. No matter how you slice it, the numbers still come out the same. So to the rest of the people in the country who believe that they do have the sports city, just give it up already. You're wasting your breath. BOSTON: WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR OUR THANK YOU SINCE 1776.

I hate to admit it, but you could be right on this one. While I will take my Yankees as the Baseball team of the decade, there's not too much debate over Boston being sports city of this time period. As much as it pains me to say it, you have had an impressive decade. Let me just point out a few small details that I took away from your post.

1. 2007 how did the Super Bowl work out for you guys. Hey, like you said I at least have to try to one up you where I can.

2. You may have the City of the decade, but New York could easily be the top city, in all of sports, of all time. Ill leave that one for us to discuss at a later time.

3. When you were mentioning sports cities that have multiple championships this decade, you forgot to include glorious Detroit. I know what you said about hockey, however it is still considered one of the major 4. The Wings took the cup in 2001-02 and then again in 2007-08. Pistons took the finals from the Lakers in 5 games back in 2004, making it 3 total this decade for Detroit as well. You could say the Lions had the complete opposite of a championship going 0-16, that's got to count for something!

Other than that, congrats on your decade. It will be the last you ever hear me say that and may be the last good one you have in a long while.
