Playoff Endorsement for the San Diego Super Chargers

With the Jets playoff chances all but dashed, Its time for The Writer X to move on. I need too find a playoff bound team to root for. I don't wanna do this, but like a underdog politician after they bomb at the Iowa Caucus I have no choice. I gotta find a team to throw my support behind, and officially endorse for a run too Super Bowl XLIV in Miami on February 7th, 2010...

For The Writer X it came down to two teams...The New Orleans Saints, and the San Diego Chargers. There's two reasons I root for the Saints--Marques Colston, and Drew Bress. Gotta love Colston because like me hes a Hofstra Alum, and Bress is a leader, who plays with straight fire burning in his chest, his drive in my opinion is second to only one. That one being San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. So yes, The Writer X has decided to officially throw his fan hood behind the San Diego Super Chargers...Here are my reasons, and why you should too...

1. Philip Rivers is emerging as one of the best QBs in the NFL

Rarely do I like to use the "L" word when discussing a football player, it just seems out of place for the game of football, but I if I had pick one quarterback to build a franchise around it would be Phil Rivers. This guy is flat out football player, and is a remarkable 17-0 as a starter in December. When the game is on the line Rivers is on point(just ask the Bengals,Cowboys and Giants about that), and he does it with a litany of receivers who are good, but hardly great. Rivers best receiver happens to be his tight end Antonio Gates, who is playing on a whole nother level right now. When it comes down to it Rivers is a born leader, who gets the job done, and plays with a fire and tenacity thats unrivaled by any other QB in the NFL. Whats makes Rivers play this season even more remarkable is that hes doing it with a diminished running game. Make no mistake about it, LaDainian Tomlinson is one of the greatest backs of all time, but hes half the player he was when Rivers became the Chargers starter in 2006.

2. LT deserves a title

I've never been a proponent of the notion that player deserves a title because of the career he has had, especially if the player is on the other side of his prime. In my opinion there's no place for lifetime achievement awards in football. But every so once in a while a player emerges as an all time great, and for a varying amount of reasons he doesn't have a ring. Dan Marino was one of the greatest QBs of all time, but lacks that career affirming Super Bowl Title--this generations Marino is none other than LaDainian Tomlinson. LT is one of the most dynamic players in the history of football, and seems to be an all around great guy. I say "seems" only because three weeks ago Tiger woods seemed to be a great guy, and we all know how that turned out. From what I've seen LT is consonant professional both on and off the field. You gotta respect, and yes LOVE a player who respects and loves the game as much as LT does.

3. The Chargers look damn good winning

Year in and year out the Chargers have the best uniforms in football, and this year they are especially good. The Chargers AFL 50th anniversary jerseys are literally the greatest jerseys in football history--both the home baby blues, and the away whites are fresh to death. You can almost forget my first two reasons, because in a country were most everybody will be viewing the big game in HD, isn't appearance what matters most? If the Chargers do make it to the Super Bowl they will be the home team, and those baby blues will be absolutely amazing in as Jim Nantz would say "stunning high definition."

Ive made my case, now its up to all you football fans whose team has been elimanted from playoff contention to make a choice. Even if your team hasnt been elimanted yet, chances are they will be soon enough. Just remember...The Writer X is for The San Diego Super Chargers in 2010.
