Melk Man moving down south

There are reports starting to come out from everywhere but it looks like they are true. Yankees are reaching agreements with the Atlanta Braves to bring back P Javier Vazquez in return for OF Melky Cabrera. Heres the full deal which was tweeted by Joel Sherman of the New York Post:

"so the trade is vazquez and boone logan to #Yankees for melky cabrera, mike dunn and arodys vizcaino, that is now confirmed by Post"

In a way I am upset because I loved Melky and what New York fan didn't? Solid player and his personality was even better. He will truly be missed but this makes the Yankees starting rotation that much better. Vazques is a solid starter and will be a great 3 or 4. Hes gotten better since he left from his first stint with the Yankees and this time around I think he's going to be great. He already knows what its like to pitch on the big stage so there's no worry there like a lot of new players they bring in. All in all I think its a good trade for the Yankees even though like I said it's tough to part ways with the Melk Man.

No way. Sorry to be a pessimist but this trade, while not catastrophic, is definitely a bad move. Sure, maybe Vasquez has gotten a little better but keep in mind he was pitching in a weak NL last season. In his 4 seasons pitching in the AL he is barely over .500 with like a 4.50 ERA.

Like you said, he will make a good 3rd or 4th starter. But get rid of Melky!? Come on! He has proven time and time again to be a clutch hitter and a great fielder. Yes we just picked up Granderson but Melky is the perfect utility outfielder who can start or come off the bench. Plus he has the best attitude on the time outside of Nick Swisher.

All in all, I give the trade a C+. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I hear ya Matty, poor trade for the Yankees. The Yanks could even put Melky in right and have Swisher off the bench or DH. Vazquez never had it together in New York, what would make you think he would do anything else?

The trade came out of the blue, the Yankees really didn't need a starter. Perhaps this means they'll put Joba back in the 'pen. I really think this was done to combat the Red Sox signing John Lackey. Vazquez wasn't even the first option for Cashman, who went to Chicago to inquire about Cub ace Carlos Zambrano.

I said a good trade, not that I'm in my room doing back flips over it. Your comment is everything I said, yes the NL east was weak last year, but he was still second in the NL in strikeouts with 238, and his 2.87 ERA was good for 6th. He had 14 wins with the Yankees in 04 and made his only All-Star appearance that season playing in NY. He was 15-10 last year on a bad Atlanta team. Those 15 wins would have been good for 2nd on the Yankees last season.

Melky is tough to lose, like I said, but his great attitude covers up his career .269 batting average, and 65 RBI's a year on average through his career. He is an average player, and as much as I love him too the numbers don't lie. He came up with some clutch hits throughout the regular season yes, but he didn't do all that much in the postseason. He has a career.239 AVG. in the playoffs. So once again, he was a great role player and had a great attitude, but its not as big of a blow as everyone is making it out to be.

My argument isn't that they shouldn't have traded away Melky, because they did get more--potentially--than what they gave away. However my problem is why? While Vazquez did have 14 wins in his last run with the New York, he also sported a very high 4.91 ERA. The guy couldn't pitch against the AL East in 2004, what makes the Yankees think he can in a better AL East now?

You see power pitchers all the time leave the AL and dominant the NL, but how often do you see it the other way around? I don't know, I just feel like there are more questions left after this trade than there are answers. Just like in Boston or in Philly, you have to have the makeup to play in New York. And we have only seen Vazquez produce for losing teams in lackluster organizations.
